The History of Child Welfare by Race.

Shanelle Dupree attorney and founder of SkinDEEP facilitated a presentation encouraging child welfare program leaders to become aware of the historical pieces that play into the child welfare system today, to be brave, critical and speak up in spaces where inequities persists and connect with others in the field doing the same. She leads a course that all involved in child welfare are urged to attend.

Key presenters included Derrick Stephens, former foster youth and now counselor provided a workshop to understand how to impact change within systems using position and power.

Author, Margie Carr told the story of the successful Black Americans in Kansas City and how intentional disinvestment and discrimination poorly impacts communities. She shared about her book, Kansas City’s Montgall Avenue: Black Leaders and the Street They Called Home.
